FAVA Radio 4/5/2017: with guest Emily Highkin

Posted on 04/05/17

This week on FAVA Radio, we welcomed Emily Highkin, instructor of a new class for kids this spring, Make Your Own Sock Cat. Emily is a sophomore at Oberlin College studying mathematical economics, and integrated her creativity and sewing skills at an early age by starting her own sock monkey business in elementary school. As a child she made dozens of monkeys, deviating from the typical grey-brown-red creatures to create sock creatures with various colors and costumes.

James and Emily talked a bit about the history of the sock monkey, which derived from the corn husk doll and began around the time of the Great Depression. It is an old tradition that even has attracted many collectors.

In Emily’s Make Your Own Sock Cat class, children will have the opportunity to create their own sock creature entirely by hand. Students will be encouraged to use their creativity with unique costumes and materials for their creature
