Double Weave Workshop

August 10 & 11 (workshop)

Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 12-5pm

August 12-16 (open studio) 11am-5pm

Learn to easily weave two layers of cloth on a 4-shaft loom in a variety of techniques: tube, side opening, center opening, double wide, pocket, stuffed or not. Weave a 9" sampler with the new techniques and then a wall hanging for your shuttles and other small weaving equipment or a project of your choice. This workshop is to help advanced beginners and intermediate weavers learn how a simple threading and tie-up makes weaving double weave a useful option when designing a future project.

FAVA will be available during the following week (Aug 12-16) for open studio hours to complete your project.

Those who sign up to use the four looms available at FAVA will need to schedule time prior to the weekend to dress the loom. Participants may also bring their own loom already dressed to FAVA for the class and studio time the week after.

Number of harnesses: 4 minimum. Size of reed 6, 8 (preferred), 10, 12.

When registration is complete you will receive warping and threading handouts. This class will be based on the techniques from Jennifer Moore's book, Doubleweave Basics, pages 21-27. It is available online at Amazon.com

Mary Carmosino

I have been weaving for over ten years and enjoying every minute of learning from my mistakes, successes and other weavers!

I began on a Union 36 rug loom and now weave on a 8-harness 22 inch Harrisville floor loom. This has kind of forced me to learn the double weave process in order to weave wider pieces on this loom. Double weave has also opened new doors to other techniques and pattern design for new projects.

In the last six years I have assisted teaching at FAVA for the January Term Weaving Class which was created by Betsy Bruce in 2001. Working with college students and first time weavers was a large learning experience for everyone involved including me.

Now I enjoy sharing what I have learned with others! So come join me at FAVA along with other teaching artists and use the creativity we all have inside!

scholarships & aid

FAVA reviews and considers all application for scholarship assistance. While we may not be able to provide a complete scholarship to all those who request it, we are committed to making our classes available to as many people as possible – regardless of individual financial circumstances. For this reason, it is important that all scholarship requests are received well in advance of the class starting date, so we may allocate our available funds accordingly. We may consider any of the following factors when determining eligibility for scholarships:

  • Annual family income
  • Individual or special circumstances
  • Whether the applicant qualifies for the National Free/Reduced Price School Lunch program
(for students age 18 & younger)

**FAVA also encourages applicants to consider partial scholarship assistance, in which case the student only pays some portion of the class tuition.

All information will be kept confidential and will be used solely to determine the amount of scholarship assistance to be provided.
