Weave Your Own Rag Rug (May)

AGES: 16+.

Two-week sessions May 1- May 15 or May 16-30.

An opportunity to just weave your own rug! No experience necessary, just the interest in trying the weaving process without doing all the work of dressing the loom.

The rug loom, a Union 36, is dressed and ready to go. The instructor will get you started on the loom and help with the finishing once you have completed weaving your (2’ x 3’) rug. Open weaving time will be scheduled over a two-week period during FAVA Gallery hours.

You will need to put cloth strips together to weave with or use some natural mop cotton provided by FAVA for a small materials fee.The loom is warped with a rainbow of colors so almost any color could work or, make a denim rug out of old jeans! If you want to put strips together for a real rag rug that will need to be done prior to your session time. Your ripped strips are put together by machine sewing a simple corner fold, similar to putting quilt strips together. View this video for instructions https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5C1nhGSTy4U

Weaving times will be done in two-week sessions from May 1 through May 30. Contact FAVA at 440.774.7158 or pam@fava.org to reserve your dates. Registration can be completed online or by contacting FAVA.

Mary Carmosino

I have been weaving for over ten years and enjoying every minute of learning from my mistakes, successes and other weavers!

I began on a Union 36 rug loom and now weave on a 8-harness 22 inch Harrisville floor loom. This has kind of forced me to learn the double weave process in order to weave wider pieces on this loom. Double weave has also opened new doors to other techniques and pattern design for new projects.

In the last six years I have assisted teaching at FAVA for the January Term Weaving Class which was created by Betsy Bruce in 2001. Working with college students and first time weavers was a large learning experience for everyone involved including me.

Now I enjoy sharing what I have learned with others! So come join me at FAVA along with other teaching artists and use the creativity we all have inside!

scholarships & aid

FAVA reviews and considers all application for scholarship assistance. While we may not be able to provide a complete scholarship to all those who request it, we are committed to making our classes available to as many people as possible – regardless of individual financial circumstances. For this reason, it is important that all scholarship requests are received well in advance of the class starting date, so we may allocate our available funds accordingly. We may consider any of the following factors when determining eligibility for scholarships:

  • Annual family income
  • Individual or special circumstances
  • Whether the applicant qualifies for the National Free/Reduced Price School Lunch program
(for students age 18 & younger)

**FAVA also encourages applicants to consider partial scholarship assistance, in which case the student only pays some portion of the class tuition.

All information will be kept confidential and will be used solely to determine the amount of scholarship assistance to be provided.
