Art I

AGES: 15+

This class is modeled from the nationally recognized Oberlin High School Art program. Basic skills in drawing using a variety of media will be explored. This is for the student who wishes to recharge old skills, or for the student who always wanted to take art, but never had the time or opportunity. Regardless of your motivation for taking this class, by the end of the course you will be amazed by what you have created. Art II students are welcome to join the class and follow the Art II curriculum.

Lorna Kretchmar

Lorna Kretchmar

Lorna Kretchmar is a retired high school art teacher with thirty years experience with the Oberlin Schools. During her tenure, Oberlin High School was recognized seven times by the National Scholastic Art and Writing Competition as a Gold Medal art program. In addition, Lorna Kretchmar was recognized by the University of Chicago with an Outstanding Teacher Award. Mrs. Kretchmar received recognition from the United States Congress as an outstanding educator in 2012. She was also honored to receive the Community Teacher of the Year award from the Oberlin Heritage Center and the Kendal Community Art Award.

Mrs. Kretchmar served on the founding board of directors of FAVA and recently served another two terms on the FAVA Board. Currently she serves on the Education Committee for FAVA. Mrs. Kretchmar also founded the Oberlin Makes a Difference program for the Oberlin City Schools.

An alumnus of Ohio University, Mrs. Kretchmar enjoys creating art as well as teaching art.

scholarships & aid

FAVA reviews and considers all application for scholarship assistance. While we may not be able to provide a complete scholarship to all those who request it, we are committed to making our classes available to as many people as possible – regardless of individual financial circumstances. For this reason, it is important that all scholarship requests are received well in advance of the class starting date, so we may allocate our available funds accordingly. We may consider any of the following factors when determining eligibility for scholarships:

  • Annual family income
  • Individual or special circumstances
  • Whether the applicant qualifies for the National Free/Reduced Price School Lunch program
    (for students age 18 & younger)


**FAVA also encourages applicants to consider partial scholarship assistance, in which case the student only pays some portion of the class tuition.

All information will be kept confidential and will be used solely to determine the amount of scholarship assistance to be provided.
