Glass Mosaic

Students will be applying and arranging mosaic tiles of varying colors and shades, using glue, to a 12”x12” pre-designed (by the student) backer board. After these have dried, students will learn how to apply grout to the mosaic surface as well as various pigments to the grout, and cleaning techniques that will enhance their mosaic piece. Upon finishing, students will have a beautiful 12”x12” glass mosaic piece that they will have fully created from design to construction.

You will never look at a shard of glass, fragment of stone or misplaced tile in the same way again after taking this class. It’s an easy art form that doesn’t require expensive tools. Materials can be found at any stained-glass shop, tile store or antique shop. Scrap from stained glass, broken tile that will be discarded or reasonably priced antique plates can be used for this class. The grout can be bought at hardware stores or tile shops. The material can be attached to any rough surface such as furniture, table tops, jewelry boxes, wooden boards, feather boards and more. This is a great way to teach any subject matter in any art class. The workshop program will clearly show how this can apply. It is an old art form, but can bring contemporary designing or any subject taught in art.

Sheree Ferrato

One of Ohio’s premier stained glass artists, Sheree Ferrato is the owner of Verite’ Glass, Inc. located at 11 S. Main Street in downtown Oberlin, Ohio. After having worked with glass for 19 years, she opened Verite’ (meaning truth) in 1993. Her studio offers clients and students a glimpse into her work and the opportunity to learn about glass through her classes.

While art is her passion, art education is her focus. Sheree has been teaching for 26 years, most recently with The Center for Arts Inspired Learning (Young Audiences), and Arthouse, nonprofit organizations whose mission is to “help make the arts an essential part of young people’s education.” Sheree also teaches at many local school districts within their art and science programs.

Besides her studio collection, Sheree’s artwork is seen throughout the community with her donated pieces to the Avon Library, Ireland Cancer Center in Lorain, North Ridgeville Library, the South Lorain Library, as well as Parma General Hospital and Mercy Cancer Center in Elyria, Ohio among others.

Sheree’s credentials are extensive, covering a 40 year career. She studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, attended glass seminars in Arizona, California, Colorado and New Mexico. She apprenticed for 4 years under renowned artist Narcissus Quagliata in San Francisco. She has used these experiences and knowledge to develop her amazing work and in helping children and adults enjoy this art media as much as she does.

scholarships & aid

FAVA reviews and considers all application for scholarship assistance. While we may not be able to provide a complete scholarship to all those who request it, we are committed to making our classes available to as many people as possible – regardless of individual financial circumstances. For this reason, it is important that all scholarship requests are received well in advance of the class starting date, so we may allocate our available funds accordingly. We may consider any of the following factors when determining eligibility for scholarships:

  • Annual family income
  • Individual or special circumstances
  • Whether the applicant qualifies for the National Free/Reduced Price School Lunch program
(for students age 18 & younger)

**FAVA also encourages applicants to consider partial scholarship assistance, in which case the student only pays some portion of the class tuition.

All information will be kept confidential and will be used solely to determine the amount of scholarship assistance to be provided.
