Artist Statement:
I consider artmaking to be emotional exorcism. My practice explores the body as a site, a receptacle, an object, a host, a weapon, a means of expression, and a vehicle for action. Expressing the plurality of the self is an act of creating joy within detachment. I posit identity as expansive, multi-faceted, continuously shifting, and difficult to distill. I intend for viewers to become aware of their own plural selves, alienated and integrated with one another.
I lost access to my studio space at Ohio University in mid-March. My practice relies heavily on the tools in the ceramic studio, sculpture studio, and wood shop, which I no longer have access to. In addition to logistical challenges, the solitude has also been difficult - daily discussions, impromptu studio visits, and the general feeling of working alongside others feed my practice. I am hungry.
Working out of my apartment with limited space and tools, I began a series of colored pencil drawings. I have also been making photographs and video, expanding my digital skills. Recently, I have been able to move into a swing space above a local gallery where I am a member. The space is raw, but I am grateful for it. I hope to gain access to my primary studio space soon so that I can begin working on my thesis exhibition scheduled for Spring 2021.
