"Starting with rolled out slabs, I cut out the sides, bottom, and the top of the box. Laying flat, the surface of each piece is textured with stamps and fragments I have made of clay. The parts are scored, slipped, and assembled. Often I continue to stamp the built box to give it a pillowed, roundish shape. After the piece is dry, white underglaze is painted on and multi-colored underglazes are washed on to accent the texture. The pieces are then detailed with glossy glazes, which are like set jewels when fired. "
