Young Waterlily Leaves in the Sky

Digital Photography

Linda Grashoff

Artist Statement:

Although I have worked in other media, my practice currently focusses on photography. I photograph to affirm, honor, and praise what lies before me. Considering the material world sacred, I strive to reveal my reverence for it in my work.

Photography is especially suited to this task. It is a process where a product emerges from corporeal fact: as light reflects off matter to make impressions on chemical emulsion or digital sensors, it results in a product on paper or other medium, including a computer screen. The photographer’s participation, though necessary, is secondary.

My special interest is in the biofilms and precipitates created by iron-breathing bacteria in Ohio’s Vermilion River. Over the years I have spent most of my camera time in public parks, photographing evidence of these microbes and other aspects of nature. Living at Kendal at Oberlin during the coronavirus pandemic, however, I am not able to travel outside our little locked-down retirement community except for medical appointments. So, I have taken to photographing the Kendal grounds. This new habit has proven to offer a richer experience than I had imagined it could.

Bio:

Linda Grashoff completed a formal career as an editor, writer, and photojournalist, in 2001 leaving the staff of Oberlin College to spend her days making visual art.
