This course is for absolute beginners or those with very little experience in learning how to make pottery on the wheels. This course will teach you the basic techniques of how to wedge the clay in preparation, and how to center, open and pull/shape basic forms on the pottery wheels (process is called throwing). This course will meet once a week for two months, and will include a fee for materials used.

Zita Smith
Zita is the high school ceramics teacher at Lorain City Schools. She has been teaching there since 2019, and has been an art teacher for nearly 10. Zita has been doing ceramics since she was 15 years old. She started learning in high school and never stopped. Zita is currently building a ceramics studio in her own home, as well as getting her masters degree in art education online from The Ohio State University. She have two bachelor degrees from the University of Akron are in Art Education and Theatre and Performing Arts. She specializes in three-dimensional art, and is also skilled in basic drawing and painting as well. Zita also teaches private lessons.
FAVA reviews and considers all application for scholarship assistance. While we may not be able to provide a complete scholarship to all those who request it, we are committed to making our classes available to as many people as possible – regardless of individual financial circumstances. For this reason, it is important that all scholarship requests are received well in advance of the class starting date, so we may allocate our available funds accordingly. We may consider any of the following factors when determining eligibility for scholarships:
