Our Family Traditions - Fall 2025

For all ages and artistic levels! Saturdays from 1 -3 pm, October 11 and 18

In this two day class, we will explore the work of Carmen Lomas Garza, a Chicana artist whose artwork depicts everyday events and family traditions in Mexican American culture. An example of her work is the painting above titled “Cleaning Nopalitos”. After studying her work, we will draw and paint about important family events and traditions. We will answer questions such as, “What are the beautiful things about our families that we want to show others? How are our family traditions different from and similar to each other’s traditions? How can these events and traditions help us build community together?” Come express yourself with us! There will be an opportunity to showcase your artwork and thinking at The Oberlin Public Library in the weeks following the class, if you wish to.

Nuestras tradiciones familiares - otoño 2025

¡Para todas las edades niveles artísticos! los sábados, 11 y 18 de octubre, de 1 -3 pm

En esta clase de dos días, exploraremos el arte de Carmen Lomas Garza, artista chicana cuyas obras representan eventos cotidianos y tradiciones familiares en la cultura mexicoamericana. Un ejemplo de su trabajo es la pintura de arriba titulada "Limpiando Nopalitos". Después de estudiar su arte, dibujaremos y pintaremos sobre eventos y tradiciones familiares importantes. Vamos a responder a preguntas como: "¿Qué aspectos hermosos de nuestras familias queremos mostrar a los demás? ¿En qué se diferencian y se parecen nuestras tradiciones familiares a las de los demás? ¿Cómo pueden estos eventos y tradiciones ayudarnos a construir la comunidad juntos?" ¡Ven a expresarte con nosotros! Si lo deseas, tendrás la oportunidad de exhibir tu arte y reflexiones en la Biblioteca Pública de Oberlin en las semanas posteriores a la clase, si lo deseas.
