Professional Practices: Writing an Artist Statement (16+)

Professional Practices: Writing an Artist Statement

Ages 16+
November 22 from 1-4pm

This 3 hour lecture based workshop is designed as a hands on, interactive experience to create/write an artist statement; which will speak for the artist when they are not available, a tool for gallerists to help promote you as an artist. Developing this writing skill will help the artist make a successful transition from creating art to presenting and promoting it, and for established artists who want to get their work into galleries and exhibitions.

Handouts will be sent to participants ahead of time, to fill out and bring to the class.

Mary Urbas

I have 45+ years of experience in the professional art world as a gallery owner, curator, teacher, and consultant. As an exhibited fiber and clay artist, I am able to bring a real-world perspective to both sides of the business of marketing fine art, and fine contemporary crafts. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art, My work as a textile designer and clay artist has been exhibited in shows throughout Northeast Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania, receiving many honors including several Best in Crafts awards from juried shows. I am a member of the Surface Design Association of America and the American Crafts Council, as well as a participant in several regional artist guilds and associations. I sit on numerous boards and gallery committees of non-profit organizations.

scholarships & aid

FAVA reviews and considers all application for scholarship assistance. While we may not be able to provide a complete scholarship to all those who request it, we are committed to making our classes available to as many people as possible – regardless of individual financial circumstances. For this reason, it is important that all scholarship requests are received well in advance of the class starting date, so we may allocate our available funds accordingly. We may consider any of the following factors when determining eligibility for scholarships:

  • Annual family income
  • Individual or special circumstances
  • Whether the applicant qualifies for the National Free/Reduced Price School Lunch program
(for students age 18 & younger)

**FAVA also encourages applicants to consider partial scholarship assistance, in which case the student only pays some portion of the class tuition.

All information will be kept confidential and will be used solely to determine the amount of scholarship assistance to be provided.
