This online course is designed for painters at different stages of experience working in acrylic. It is ideal for those who are interested in moving beyond creative roadblocks, exploring new subject matter, strengthening technical skills and developing a more personal approach to painting. Working in a supportive small group of no more than seven participants, you’ll share your work, receive thoughtful feedback and exchange ideas in a relaxed, encouraging atmosphere. Through critiques, demonstrations, discussions, and examples of works by well-known artists, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the essential building blocks of successful painting: drawing, composition, value, color theory and paint application.
Each session will include practical and relevant strategies that you can immediately apply to your own work. Whether you’re looking to improve your painting technique, find new inspiration or simply maintain momentum in your artistic process, this course will help you see your work with fresh eyes and continue growing as an artist.

- Heavy body acrylic paints (Liquitex or Golden brands recommended):
Cadmium Red Medium, Quinacridone Magenta, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Yellow Light, Pthalocyanine Blue (green shade), Ultramarine Blue (red shade), Titanium White, Mars Black
- 8 oz. bottle matte medium
- Disposable palette paper pad
- Brushes for acrylics: an assortment of Round, Flat, Bright, Filbert, and/or Angle brushes in a range of sizes
- 9x12 inch pad of heavy weight drawing paper for rough sketches
- Color Wheel by the Color Wheel Company
- Optional Painting Surfaces for Finished Work (9x12 in. recommended)
- Watercolor paper pad (Strathmore, Canson or Soho brands recommended)
- Canvas paper
- Canvas board
- Pre-stretched, sized canvas

Jean Kondo Weigl
Jean Kondo Weigl is a painter and has taught several classes in drawing and painting at FAVA for adults and teens. Having received a BA in Art from Scripps College, an MA in Studio Art from Oberlin College and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Utah, Jean’s teaching experience includes positions at Oberlin College, the Lorain County Community College, Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA) and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Her work has been exhibited in numerous local, regional and national shows and she is the recipient of grants from the Ohio Arts Council, Zygote Gallery and Press and the Yaddo Foundation. Originally from Oakland, California, Jean currently lives and works in Oberlin
scholarships & aid
FAVA reviews and considers all application for scholarship assistance. While we may not be able to provide a complete scholarship to all those who request it, we are committed to making our classes available to as many people as possible – regardless of individual financial circumstances. For this reason, it is important that all scholarship requests are received well in advance of the class starting date, so we may allocate our available funds accordingly. We may consider any of the following factors when determining eligibility for scholarships:
- Annual family income
- Individual or special circumstances
- Whether the applicant qualifies for the National Free/Reduced Price School Lunch program
(for students age 18 & younger)
**FAVA also encourages applicants to consider partial scholarship assistance, in which case the student only pays some portion of the class tuition.
All information will be kept confidential and will be used solely to determine the amount of scholarship assistance to be provided.
